March President's Report

6/17/20262 min read

OK, now that Duke has won the ACC tournament, I can refocus a bit. Although it is a little early for the monthly “President’s Report,” there is so much happening right now at Cattail—including the wild up-and-down March weather, with the forsythia bright yellow and the hyacinths and daffodils in their full glory, not to mention a few crocuses here and there.

On the Hall front, it is now officially raised. Mark Roy will be helping Heiko engineer the new foundations, which come next, at which point the Hall will be lowered about a foot from its present height. Mark, a structural engineer, is donating his time to help with this phase of the project.

You’ll notice in the photo below that the flagpole is gone—it was damaged during Helene, and Heiko and Sue are donating a new one.

Speaking of donations, please check out our Membership page. Contributions are rolling in practically daily—thank you all so very much.

Also, take a look at the photo gallery in the History section. Jim Baden has been a regular contributor, and more will be coming to that page as well as to the video page shortly.

On a related front, we are also pleased to see that Mark Huber now has a new footbridge to his house. Pictured below is the progress as of yesterday on the new North Fork bridge - this is another generous Samaritan’s Purse project up here.

Speaking of infrastructure, Mark Roy contacted NCDOT earlier this month and passes this along:

Good afternoon, Mr. Roy. My name is McCray Coates, and I am the Project Manager on the NC 197S Progressive Design Build project. I received your inquiry regarding Deep Gap and Winter Star Roads. The roads would remain unpaved but there are locations where there are slope failures that will be repaired as part of the project.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks

McCray Coates, PE

Mark also checked the list of NCDOT bridges planned for repairs or rebuilding, and the "Baden" bridge (by the red house) is on the list but the Winter Star bridge (what I call the old silver paved bridge) over Winter Star Creek is not.

Oh – be sure to stop by soon at Riverlife to purchase a raffle ticket: Danny is selling tickets for a beautiful side-by-side that Hell or High Waters is raffling off as a fundraiser for their extensive volunteer flood recovery work.

I’ll probably have another “Cattail progress” report at the end of the month.

All the best,
Worth
