Things to do in the area

You don't have to go far to have fun, food and culture at Cattail!

A walking tour of Riverlife

100 years ago it was the Vixen Post Office, at Bolens Creek and the old River Road. Now it is the rebirth of the C. C. Grover Ray Store.

Parkway Playhouse

An historical landmark, Parkway Playhouse was once the summer workshop for the University of Miami’s theater program. Today, it is a vibrant center for theatrical activity, serving both adults and young people by producing high-quality theater experiences for audiences of all ages, year-round.

Mountain Heritage Center

The Mountain Heritage Center is located in the School Circle Historical District which has developed into a cultural arts center for Yancey County. This includes the Parkway Playhouse, Yancey County Board of Education, The Burnsville Gym, "Kids Mountain" Playground, and the home of the Yancey County Library (formerly Burnsville Elementary School)

The center has twelve studios available for rental which includes all utilities and tenants' access to wireless broadband Internet.

Some of the offices housed in the center include Traditional Voices Group, Yancey County Economic Development Commission, and the Parkway Playhouse.

The NuWray Inn

First built in 1833, the NuWray is North Carolina's oldest continuously operating hotel. With nearly 200 years of history behind it, the Grande Dame of Burnsville has undergone a full-scale restoration under new ownership, giving it the chance at another century of service. A full array of dining options is available in the hotel and adjacent.

Mt. Mitchell State Park

Located in Yancey County 30 miles northeast of Asheville, Mount Mitchell State Park was the genesis of North Carolina's state parks system. At 6,684 feet, the mountain is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and an observation deck provides breathtaking mountain views on a clear day. Easy trails at the summit explore the Fraser fir forest, while a vast network of challenging trails — including the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail — extend into adjacent wilderness areas and lead to backpacking opportunities within Pisgah National Forest.

Hiking at Cattail

One can hike directly from their cabin at Cattail to the top of Mt. Mitchell.
Here are maps and descriptions for 15 trails that include wondrous waterfalls, views, and historic destinations, all that originate here. No car necessary!

Gemstone Mining at Emerald Village

About 45 minutes from Cattail, Emerald Village — the old McKinney Mine — is a fun family day trip, with an old-time museum, a model railroad layout, sluice mining for minerals, ice cream, and much more.
