May President's Report

6/17/20262 min read

Well — May has been a terrific month for Cattail, with our All-Star Donors pushing us over the top this week to get the next phase of the Hall Restoration Project moving along.

This phase includes building a structural foundation and lowering the building onto it — fully meeting code requirements and, hopefully, ending the cycle of floor flooding once and for all. Once the Hall is lowered, the Building Committee, which has made all of this happen, will begin seriously discussing future plans and dreams for the Hall, always aligning those dreams, of course, with the continuing realities of fundraising.

Speaking of fundraising, we remain in regular contact with Rebuilding Hollers and Samaritan’s Purse while their own processes continue to play out. We remain encouraged that fundraising — both within the Association and through outside partnerships such as these — will continue to match the progress we hope to maintain on the Hall Restoration Project.

About the Cattail Creek Community web page (special thanks to the Building Committee for the new promotional banner on the Hall!), I reported last week that we put together a “Helene History” page on the new website, and since then we’ve added another noteworthy feature at the bottom of the that page: a section dedicated to links to eyewitness stories as well as their photo and video galleries.

And in another improvement to the site, I have added a “Things To Do” item to the top menu. This new page includes a lot of cool stuff, including Susan’s and my free downloadable booklet, 15 Hiking Trails of Cattail.

In other bits of Cattail news, I am sorry to report that Faye Barrow has been hospitalized at Mission Hospital Asheville in Room A510 West with jaundice. Her email is maeme125@gmail.com and her cell number is 904-874-7166.

Special thanks, by the way, to Tammy Burkart, who has painted a beautiful (and authentic) new sign for the Mighty Mouse Bridge.

Before and after

In still more improvements around Cattail this month, concrete has now been poured for the center support and one abutment of the new Lower North Fork Bridge, and the state has cleaned off the approaches to the new Baden Bridge. FEMA also continues creek bank cleanup down below Heiko’s compound.

And last but certainly not least, do not forget that we have two Cattail thespians appearing in the Parkway Playhouse production of Sister Act, opening tomorrow and running through June 7.

As to next month, the board will meet shortly to finalize plans for the 4th of July. Keep your calendars open and your ATVs full of gas (don’t forget you can drive them down to the new Wilson store for a fill-up!). As soon as those plans are finalized, I will let you all know.

Have a great weekend, Worth
